It is a world of artists and painters, aristocratic souls who possess a refined sense of taste, a faultless feeling for style, all of which is destroyed by war - an effect which is reinforced by the socialist revolution. The forces of evil are senseless, and the film opposes them with a killing irony. The film's outlook is unashamedly subjective, but that is where its strength lies. The film makes wide use of special effects. The author injects colour into black and white images achieving a painterly expressiveness. The film's music was written by St Petersburg's famous composer, Boris Grebenshikov
